[January 21, 2014]–

Can we have robust ethics without God? When it comes to seemingly black and white issues like human slavery and sex trafficking it may seem obvious what to do about them, but then again – maybe not.

While there is broad agreement in terms of people’s moral beliefs or sentiments about such issues, the really interesting question is why?  Why should we care to combat apparent social injustice?

Symposium

This year’s annual Symposium (January 31-February 2) at Purdue University will directly tackle this issue.  It will feature a debate between two prominent professors exploring which worldview best explains or accounts for our common moral sentiments and beliefs regarding human slavery and sex trafficking:  in other words “What Would Jesus Do v. What Would Darwin Do?”

This dialogue between John Hare (Professor of Philosophical Theology at Yale) and Michael Ruse (Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University) will be available via live stream.

Testimonials

In addition we’ll have a Cru/IJM speaker, a former sex slave, and a former porn star both testifying of their freedom in Christ from slavery.
This event will draw thousands from the campus, community, and surrounding region. Led by multiple campus ministries and churches, its purpose is to explore and debate some of the most probing questions about faith, reason, and life via panel discussions, lectures, and debates.

To Participate

For details and to be part of this event this year without much effort on your part see www.symposiachristi.com.

You might also enjoy a short promo video explaining the history, philosophy, and potential of the Symposium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ8V6yF7DpY.   There I lay out a brief history of our event and how you might be part of it, now and in the future.

Last year 4,200 attended the debate, 10k more viewed live stream from 60 countries around the world with over 100k hits now on YouTube. We were #1 on Twitter that night.  This year promises to exceed those numbers as we wrestle with whether Christianity or atheism best accounts for and provides motivation for commonly held moral beliefs and sentiments concerning radical social injustice.

Plan to join us.
